Code Relief Program approved and expedited review of Building plans

(Miami, FL October 25, 2018) - Today, the City of Miami Commission unanimously approved two ordinances to amend the City’s code. The first ordinance approves the Code Relief Program which allows for Homestead property owners to participate in an amnesty program to bring their properties into compliance with the Florida Building Code or which did not have proper proof of permits. With its approval, the City will have the opportunity to assist those who wish to legalize their properties in a manner that allows the safe and orderly procurement of permits to allow for the legalization of structures constructed prior to March 1, 2002. Applicants to this relief program must apply before September 30, 2019. The ordinance was co-sponsored by Commissioners Manolo Reyes and Wifredo Gort.

Additionally, the City of Miami approved an ordinance amending the City's code to provide for an expedited overnight review of building plans by the Building Department. The creation of an expedited overnight plan review process will allow for faster response times for the customers of the Building Department and alleviate the high volume of plan submissions to the City which can result in longer waits for plans approval by the Building Department.

Under this ordinance sponsored by Commissioner Reyes, plans review or inspections shall not begin until after 4:30 pm Monday through Friday and no plans or inspection requests will be accepted on Saturday, Sunday or Holiday’s when City offices are closed.
